Australian Army Band Kapooka

2016 has been a fun and entertaining year for the Australian Army Band Kapooka, seeing many members within the band excelling on promotion courses and achieving higher musical qualifications through exceptional individual performances, all stepping outside of their comfort zones to do so. The greatest reward this year though, has come from performing as the close-knit team that is AABK.

The Band has hit the road a few times this year, touring through Condobolin, Forbes, Lake Cargelligo, Cobar, Swan Hill and Balranald. These tours have been rewarding not just for the Band, but for the ADF as a whole, by reaching out to communities which wouldn’t normally get the chance to experience the military. By performing concerts for the locals as well as special workshops and performances for schools, AABK has promoted the Army in remote NSW and VIC and did so with terrific results in every town.

Closer to home, AABK recently put on one of its most successful Music at Midday in the history of the concert series. The show was a tribute to 100 years of the ANZACs and was an audio/visual spectacular which had the audiences raving. Featuring songs and video footage from the major conflicts from WWI through to our current overseas commitments and concluding with a tribute to the fallen, the two shows were completely booked out and the thrilled crowds dug deep to donate over $2,000 for Kapooka charities. A huge effort was put in to making the concerts as spectacular and moving as they were, with special mention to CPL Justin Kennedy for his work on the footage, lighting and stage design.

The small ensembles within the Band have also been busy throughout the Riverina, providing musical support to Mess functions, charity fundraising events, community shows, the Defence Force School of Music and various primary and high schools, all the while fulfilling the everyday role as a parade band for march outs at Kapooka and RAAF Base Wagga and parades in Albury and Bandiana.

The end of the year is fast approaching, which means the Band has already started rehearsing Christmas carols for the 2016 Christmas Spectacular. The Christmas Spectacular will be held on the 11th December, (starting at 6:00pm) in Wagga music bowl at the Botanical gardens. This will be a great show featuring choirs, dancing and, as always, the Band.

AABK wishes all ADF personnel and their families a safe and happy Christmas and New Years, whether moving away from Wagga or returning for another great year at Kapooka. We are looking forward to 2017 and anticipate another full and rewarding year of providing great music to the Riverina and, of course, ARTC.
