Australian Military Bank Billy Cart Derby

The Billy Cart Derby returned to Kapooka after a break of nearly 20 years and was a resounding success. Teams came from each of the 1 RTB Companies, ARTC units, RAAF Wagga and the Clontarf Academy. Each team consisted of a manger, driver and two cart handlers, with the overall winner going on to represent ARTC at the National Billy Cart Titles to be held at Corowa in 2018.

Local television and newspapers covered the event, with features on the local nightly news and articles in the Daily Advertiser. Competition was fierce and there was only 0.95 seconds between first and second place. Each team completed three timed runs with the best two times averaged to give them a final run time.

The overall winners were the team of Echo Company/Training Support Company with a final average time of 38.57 seconds and they also had the fastest run time of the day at 37.45 seconds, at least two seconds faster than their nearest competitor. The Military Police were on had to record the cart speeds and E/TSC had the fastest speed of 59 kmh. The final result for all teams was:

The Major sponsors for the event were Australian Military Bank and Kapooka Golf Club. The Bank will be sponsoring the entrance fees, accommodation and meals for the winning team at Corowa in 2018. Kapooka Golf Club provided the trophies for the event as well as the BBQ for the Show and Shine conducted on the Friday prior to race day.


Overall the event was a huge success and the Commandant has fully endorsed the running of the event again in 2018. It is anticipated that the event will run in October of each year and the winner will go onto represent ARTC Easter of the following year. Well done to all the teams for a spirited effort, fantastic carts and a great attitude also the spe3ctators who made it a fun day with their cheering, dressing up and signs.
