Three-year transformation of Kapooka neighbourhood complete

After three years the neighbourhood transformation of Defence Housing Australia (DHA) family homes at Kapooka Army Base is near completion.

Defence members posting to the areas with their families can use Online Services to see the availability of the 33 renovated properties off Kapooka Drive, before the gates of Blamey Barracks.

The renovation of houses began in early 2013 with DHA using the services of local builders in the Wagga Wagga community to complete the upgrades. Up to five properties were renovated at a time with the renovations on a single home taking approximately six months to complete.

Many of the upgrades included changes to floorplans. This was due to structural changes including removing walls to create more open living areas and the construction of master bedroom ensuites and double lock-up garages.

Each of the homes has three or four bedrooms. All of the properties upgraded now boast the same modern-day facilities.

The gardens at the front and the rear were also landscaped. The gardens now feature new plants and fresh turf. Gates were added to backyard fences to allow the convenience of vehicle access to the properties.

DHA Acting Property and Tenancy Manager, Cathy Hafter-upgrade-kitchenarrison, is based in the Wagga Wagga regional office on Morgan Street and has witnessed the transformation of the homes off Kapooka Drive.

‘Some Defence families have already enjoyed living in the renovated properties,’ she said.

‘They are now a more popular choice after the upgrade.’

For Defence members who have received posting orders it is now possible to login to Online Services to activate access. This enables members to start viewing available properties and reserve a new home.

‘The renovated houses are classified as on base and can be seen once available using Online Services,’ Ms Harrison said.

Ms Harrison reminded Defence members moving out of DHA homes in the area this posting season that pre-vacate inspections are required.
